Kaval

He was born on July 14, 1991 in Istanbul, the son of professional folk dancers. His mother’s family comes from the Ludogorie region of Bulgaria (also known as Deliorman region). His father’s family comes from Gümüşhane, a city in the Eastern Black Sea region of Turkey. His musical life began when he was 3-4 years old, imitating his father’s percussion.
Aydın was accepted to the Istanbul Technical University Turkish Music State Conservatory high school, where he started playing the kaval, an instrument that has always interested him. He started his kaval studies with Cihan Yurtçu and continued with Serdar Deli and then Haydar Tanrıverdi.
At the academic level, Aydın studied kaval and Bulgarian folk music with Lyuben Dossev at the Academy of Music, Dance and Fine Arts – “Prof. Asen Diamandiev” in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, and Musicology at Istanbul Technical University Turkish Music State Conservatory in Turkey.
From 2010 to 2013 Aydın was a member of the Turkish State Radio (TRT) Youth Orchestra in Istanbul, where he worked as a kaval player. In 2014 he was the youngest instrumentalist invited to the first “International Kaval Conference” in Istanbul/Turkey. In the following years he organized many workshops, master classes and seminars on Bulgarian folk music and advanced playing techniques on the kaval.
In addition to playing kaval as a soloist and orchestral musician in various ensembles, he is a founding member and kaval player of the ethno/world jazz and fusion formation KAPIKO.
Batuhan Aydın is considered one of the best kaval players of the new generation. He has a unique style influenced by Anatolian and Balkan folk music, jazz and free improvisation.
