Born in Istanbul in 1967, Baki Duyarlar was accepted to the cello and piano department of the State Conservatory in 1978 when he was 11 years old. He worked with Adnan Saygun, İlhan Usmanbaş and Cengiz Tanç while he studied in Mimar Sinan University State Conservatory’s composition department in 1987. He moved to Holland in 1988 and was accepted to Rotterdam State Conservatory’s jazz piano department. He graduated from Tilburg State Conservatory’s jazz piano performance department in 1993. He taught in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague for 5 years.
He returned to Istanbul in 1997 and gave concerts in the USA, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Holland, Amman, Kazakhstan and Portugal. He recorded his first album “Overseas” in 2010 with Kai Eckhardt, Sean Rickman and Stanislav Mitrovic. After his 2011 album “Colors”, his third album “Kemenjazz” which he recorded with Cem Aksel, Erdal Akyol, Derya Türkan, Şenova Ülker, Dilek Türkan and Azize was nominated for the “Best Instrumental Album” award in 2013 Turkish Music Awards. He recorded his fourth album “Time of Spring” with Janek Gwizdala, Louie Palmer and Justin Vasques.
The musician, who currently resides in Istanbul, continues to participate in international jazz festivals, while giving “Jazz Music Theory” and “Ensemble” lessons at Bahçeşehir University’s Jazz School, of which he is a founder. He also directs Istanbul Youth Jazz Orchestra.
